What are adivasi's or the scheduled tribes in India

Adivasis or the tribals are mentioned in the 5th schedule of the Constitution of India.

What do the adivasi's live on

The adivasis live predominantly on forest produce and by selling herbal medicines in the local market. They gather food, medicinal plants, make medicines, gather products like lac, gum etc etc and bring it to the local market and either sell the ware or barter it for their food requirements.

For centuries the trribes are doing specific work or job for ages since times eimmemorial.

The adivasis have the natural right to forest produce by beirth but slowly the government is impeding into their natural right of vocation /livelihood by either auctioning the forests, or alloting their forrest for industrialisation.

The fact can be seen by studying the forest as a percentage to the total land mass in India

The loss of livelihood is further compunded by social ostracism and lack of basic amenities, which were initially(i am a hindu dont worry) provide by numersous christian missionaries which worked in the forrests and tribal areas of bihar and now jharkhand orrissa and madhya pradesh(now chattisgarh)

With the rise of the right wing BJP and its sub-unit vanavasi kalyan parishad aa sort of religious hatred was created, by the vkp by opposing the missionaries(who were doing yeomen services ) providing health education and vocational job training through their numerous organisations. Any one who has liveed in delhi during the eighties and nineties would know about the english speeaking nannies(ayahs) trained by these missionaries, taking care of the kids ,when the mother used to take care of her job.

This fight opposition by the vkp/bjp and conversions by the missionaries(sometimes by moral suasion and sometimes by providing the facilities and emotional blackmail) brought about a new apradigm, neither the government did or bothered to provide basic neccessities, the opposition by the right wing forces led to a deecline in growth of missionaries, and finally to add insult to injury, the government started encroaching into their only right their land/forest.
Either by alloting the mining rightts in the forests, auctioning the forests, or prottecting the de-forestation mafia(by the corrupt forest officials) and finally, aquiring the land for industrialisation.

This was like a nail in the coffin, on one side there were the industries, on the other the rright wing opposing the conversions, the third party being the mafia, fourth being ,fifth the missionaries(conversions of course), and sixth being the insensitive government.

Leave alone providing them basic neccesities like health food education and livelihood, they snatched whatever was left with them , their last source, the land/forest.

This gave a rise to Daku mohar singh's/Phoolan Devi's, Veerappans, Maoist's and the ULFA'S
